Heart of the Florida Keys

7 mile bridgeMarathon, located in the middle of the Keys chain, is a quaint tropical community that maintains a simple, family-centric old-keys lifestyle while staying close to its seafaring heritage. Among the islands found within its city limits are Boot Key, Knight Key, Hog Key, Vaca Key, Stirrup Key, Crawl Key, Little Crawl Key, East and West Sister’s Island, Deer Key, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, and Grassy Key, all of them surrounded by the warm, blue waters of either Florida Bay or the Atlantic Ocean.

Marathon’s name originally came about from a phrase uttered by a Flagler railroad worker, who after working at a hard pace day in and day out to complete the railway complained that “this project is getting to be a real marathon” and so the railroad station was dubbed Marathon and it seems to have stuck.
