Seven Mile Bridge

The Seven Mile Bridge is a famous bridge in the Florida Keys that connects Knight's Key in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. This bridge was among the longest bridges in existence when it was built between 1978-1982, with a length of 6.79 miles, and is just one of many bridges that connect the Florida Keys along the Overseas Highway. When visiting, you will notice that there are two bridges in this location. There is an older bridge, originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge which was constructed between 1906-1912 as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, and was badly damaged by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. It was subsequently refurbished by the Federal Government as an automobile highway bridge (this bridge was 7 miles in length). Hurricane Donna in 1960 caused further damage to the highway bridge and precipitated the building of the current bridge. The vast majority of the original bridge still exists and is used as fishing piers, scenic walkways as well as access to Pigeon Key.
