Year-round Weather

Weather-wise, almost any time of year is perfect for a visit but, if water activities are on your agenda, latter April to early October might be your best bet.

A laid-back paradise

mallorysquaresunsetAh, what can one say about Key West except that it is one of the most laid back vacation spots in the country. This tiny 4 mile long x 2 mile wide island is America’s southernmost city, located 160 miles south of Miami, at the end of the continent.  When you visit the “Conch Republic”, so named when they seceded from the “union” due to a dispute with the border patrol, you will find the tempo of life has slowed down, allowing you to enjoy life to the fullest.  What other island do you know that takes the time to celebrate the sunset every night of the year? With its warm tropical climate, crystal clear waters, great food, abundance of art and history and 24/7 nightlife, Key West has a charm all its own.

There is an anything goes mentality and a creative spirit that permeatesshipwrecktower everything on the island. It has been home to pirates and wreckers, writers (Ernest Hemingway), musicians (Jimmy Buffett), treasure hunters (Mel  Fisher) and a get -away for presidents. And they still have a full cast of colorful characters today - artists, performers, chefs, musicians and people who came for vacation and never left all call this island home.  Take the time to visit the galleries, filled with original creative works, shop for tropical fashions and artifacts from ship wrecks or just drop in at the bars and hear some of the best live music anywhere.

keywestkayakingThere is always something to do in Key West. Surrounded by the only living coral reef in North America, its tropical waters have become a mecca for all sorts of water activities. Try snorkeling amid the colorful tropical fish or diving the shipwrecks, kayaking amongst the mangroves or jet skiing from the Atlantic to the Gulf and back again. The island is also a top spot for fishing. There are many charters or party boats to guide you to the hot spots. Try your hand at catching grouper, dolphin, snapper and wahoo or opt for some sport fishing for tarpon & marlin.

keywestpoolsideWant a quieter activity? Visit the butterfly conservatory, the first (or last) mile marker, shop, rent a scooter or bike and meander the quaint back streets (you might even find Nancy’s Secret Garden), or just relax and soak up the sun at one of the beaches or hotel pools.

mallorysquareentertainerOnce evening falls, get ready to enjoy the nightlife. It all starts at sunset with a celebration at Mallory Square complete with magicians, escape artists, mimes and animal acts or view it from afar as you embark on a sunset sail and enjoy some great wines and the sound of the wind in the sails on Danger’s Wind & Wine or, keywestentertaineron the other end of the spectrum, a sail with live music & and free flowing beer and margaritas on board the Fury’s Commotion on the Ocean.  Once the sun sets, the celebration continues on Duval Street.  Just take a stroll and hear everything from rock to folk to jazz.  Try Hogs Breath Saloon, after all “Hog’s Breath is better than no breath at all”, a little “Jimmy” at Schooners Wharf, some jazz at  Virgilios or, for a little wilder fare, the party at Irish Kevins.  Something for everyone’s taste, young or old.

keywestsunsetpierAh taste, yes the food – world class dining has arrived but in Key West fashion. From white table cloths to picnic benches to eating among the free range chickens at Blue Heaven, you will find some of the best food in the most unlikely places. Try Caribbean dishes of local seafoods at Latitudes on Sunset Key, Cuban dishes such as masas de puerco fritas at a locals favorite, El Siboney, French food served on the back patio at Blackfin Bistro, 4-course gourmet meals on board the “Dreamchaser” yacht, Italian dishes at La Trattoria, complete with a jazz club out back or just an all American “cheeseburger in paradise” at Cheeseburger Key West.

livelovelaugh Remember, to enjoy Key West at its very best, you must embrace the “Conch” attitude -  “take your time”, “enjoy the moment”, relax and enjoy the view (be it water or people watching).  Then top it all off with a nightcap at one of the wine bars like “The Porch” and you have the perfect ending to a day in paradise.
