Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park>

Fort East Martello Museum & Gallery

Designed after the nearly impregnable Martello watchtowers in Italy, this civil war era fort was never completed. Often called a "diamond in the rough" by the locals, it is the best preserved example of the Martello style of architecture in the country. It nows houses a collection that represents the Keys' history & the state's largest collection of Sanchez's painted wood carvings & drawings of early 20th century life in Key West. Climb the steep spiral staircase of the tower and get a fantastic view of the Atlantic coastline. The fort has its own interesting but slightly eerie atmosphere (check out the haunted doll, Robert).
