Indian Key State Historic Site

Indian Key State Historic Site is a tiny island that can only be accessed by boat. This island was once the site of a great salvaging business from shipwrecks and housed the largest population between St. Augustine and Key West. In 1840, the island was overrun by the Seminole Indians and the city burned to the ground. Today the island is overgrown by tropical plants but you can still see many of the ruins from this once thriving city. Now designated as a state park, you can swim, sunbathe, hike, picnic and snorkel/dive in the beautiful surrounding waters. To get there, rent a kayak, canoe or powerboat from nearby Robbie's Marina (MM78.5) and enjoy some time communing with nature.
