Hurricane Monument

Hurricanes are a fact of life in the Keys, but before the advent of technology, locals living in the Keys had no warning of an impending storm. In 1935, the deadliest hurricane to ever hit the keys, now known as the Great Labor Day Hurricane, with winds over 200 mph hit Islamorada creating a 17 foot tidal wave that crashed over the island killing more than 420 people. This 65'x20' monument, made from local limestone, commemorates those lives lost.
