Yay! Three of Florida Keys‘ bars were voted among the top 30 bars in Florida by Florida Travel & Life magazine. So where should you stop for a little refreshment when you are traveling south down Overseas Highway to that tropical haven called the Keys?
The Porch, 429 Caroline Street, Key West
A refined, quiet bar with a wonderful ambiance and a great selection of wines and micro-brewed beers. Great place to avoid drunks as they could never find their way down the hall.
It is located in a beautiful historic plantation house that sits on the corner of Duval and Caroline. Enter the house and take the first door on your left. Nestled behind some lush landscaping is a beautiful outdoor porch area and some inside seating as well. Staff is friendly, prices are good and the cool décor gives off a very welcoming vibe.
No food is served here but they have a stack of menus from which you can order for delivery. So sit down, relax and stay awhile.
Green Parrot – 601 Whitehead Street, Key West
A staple of Key West since 1890 and also voted one of Playboys top 20 bars in America . A laid back, tropical open air bar, a short walk from Duval, with pool tables, pinball machines & darts. Lots of local flavor with fair priced drinks and great rock music.
Order a root beer barrel shot, a long standing tradition here, which is comprised of a root beer schnapps shot dropped into a light beer and tossed down the hatch.
There is no food served here, although you can order delivery from Charlie Mac’s, a new BBQ place in town, but there is free popcorn with your drinks. Catch the Friday jam sessions at 5:30PM. Make note that it is cash only so come prepared!
Holiday Isle Tiki Bar (located next to the Postcard Inn) – 84001 Overseas Highway, Islamorada (MM84)
Everyone has to visit this world famous thatched roof tiki bar at least once and enjoy their open air bar and views of the Florida Bay. Climb the stairs to the 2nd floor and take a seat and watch the action on the beach while enjoying one of the all day every day $5 drink specials.
Later in the day, stop by for the sunset show and enjoy their happy hour which features $1 drafts, $3 well drinks and wine. On Friday the happy hour lasts all day with ½ priced beer, wine and well drinks – can’t beat that!
Live entertainment is featured on Friday and Saturday nights from 8PM-1AM, so put on your dancing shoes and dance the night away on the beach or in the bar. And join some famous celebrities who have done the same – Gary Busey, Don Johnson, Susan Sarandon and Jeff Daniels among others.
Order their famous rum runner, invented here in 1972, comprised of creme de banana, blackberry brandy, light rum, 151-proof rum, grenadine, lime juice, sour mix and topped with a dark rum floater. It really packs a punch! (oops – sorry for the pun)
Have a drink for me when you stop by and maybe I will see you there!
