Captiva Island Here We Come

Captiva Island beachI am so excited that vacation time is almost here. This year we are having a family reunion on a small barrier island on the west coast of Florida called Captiva Island. We have rented a house big enough for all of us and we are going to have a blast and make some great memories.

The entire family is counting down the days and looking forward to a much-needed respite from work and, you can bet, everyone is planning to do plenty of nothing. One of the nicest things about Captiva is the beautiful unspoiled beauty of the area and the white sand beaches where we plan on spending many hours lounging around, frolicking in the warm waters and ambling along the shoreline looking for those few special sea shells. There are also plenty of water-related activities to do which we might get to when we aren’t lolling about.  When, or maybe I should say if, we do finally work up the energy to move, the guys plan to do some fishing in the backcountry for redfish and snook while we girls are going to pamper ourselves with a nice massage at The Spa at Tween Waters Inn. (Sounds like we got the better end of that deal). We also don’t want to miss seeing the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge where we can hike several trails as well as rent a kayak to paddle through the mangroves (one of my favorite things to do).

The Bubble Room, SanibelOf course we have to eat and there are a few restaurants on our agenda that are not to be missed. The kids will enjoy a visit to The Bubble Room complete with trains running around near the ceiling and rooms decorated in various outlandish styles and we’ll also hit Island Cow at breakfast time where the kids can entertain themselves with a bean bag toss on the side lawn while waiting for their meal. As for the adults, we’ll stick with the casual keysy-style eateries like Mucky Duck and maybe slip in one nice meal (if we can find a babysitter) at Mad Hatter.

Captiva SunsetOf course, a few libations are on the menu too, just to keep the ‘chill’ on, with stops at R.C. Otters, Crow’s Nest and Keylime Bistro definitely on the agenda.  And, to top off a wonderful day, we will toast to family as we watch the spectacular sun set over the gulf.

Once there, I will keep you apprised of our adventures along with plenty of photos.

Hope y’all are looking forward to a summer vacation as well. Have a blast!
