BIG PINE KEY/LOWER KEYS

Wilderness, Wildlife & Solitude

7 mile bridgeYou know you’ve reached the lower keys when you cross the 7-mile bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world, and the road takes a more westerly course. You will be surprised to see that this area is comprised of more open wilderness than settlement and more wildlife than wild parties.

In the Lower Keys chain, Big Pine Key is the second largest of the keys and most well-known as being the home of the National Key Deer Refuge. There are about 28 other keys that make up this chain among which are Little Pine Key, Bahia Honda Key, home of one of the top-rated beaches in the country, Bahia Honda State Park, Little Duck Key, No Name Key, a great place to spot key deer or hike the refuge trails, Little Torch Key, Sugarloaf Key, Ramrod Key, Summerland Key, Geiger Key, Knockemdown Key, known as one of the best locations for sea kayaking in all the keys, and many others.

Don’t expect to find fancy lodging in this section of the Keys as most are quaint bed & breakfasts, basic but charming keys-style cottages, 1960’s bungalows and motels on marinas and a few campgrounds. You will find most rooms have very nice water views, are equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes and offer onsite kayaking and snorkeling. Two exceptions are Little Palm Island, which resides on its own island off Little Torch Key and a beach house set on its own private island that can be rented weekly or monthly and comes with its own boat.

Restaurants are laid back and unpretentious but serve up some of the most delicious seafood and barbecue. little palm islandChoose from tiki bars with views of the water, restaurants on marinas serving fish straight from the docks, small locals' places that serve delcious homemade dishes and offbeat places that are hard to find but are some of the most fun, unique places you’ll ever visit. Again, the exception is the upscale restaurant on Little Palm Island where you can dine on the beach among the tiki torches for a once-in-a-lifetime experience complete with a ferry ride to the island.

bahia honda beachAs for your daytime pleasure, you will find there is no lack of things to see and do.  Visit Bahia Honda’s beach where you can snorkel directly off the beach, fish from the shoreline, hike the nature trails or paddle around in a kayak. Want to spend the day on the water? Venture out to Looe Key, one of the top diving and snorkeling spots in the world, and see an abundance of marine life along the coral reef  or try your hand at backcountry mangrove or open-ocean fishing for tarpon, dolphin, redfish, snook and more.

key deerBack on land, you can visit the weird Bat Tower, the Blue Hole, an abandoned quarry with its share of snakes and alligators or meander on over to the National Key Deer Refuge and catch a glimpse of the tiny 26”-30” tall deer that roam wild. (But please don’t’ feed the deer and drive slow as they don’t watch where they are going.)

bahia honda sunsetAt the end of the day, wind down in Lower Keys style with quiet happy hours at friendly local hangouts. Hit some of the unusual places that are entertainment in and of themselves - No Name Pub, where autographed one dollar bills are stapled to the walls and ceiling or Boondocks Grille & Drafthouse, a bar complete with a minature golf course. And, if you want to live on the wild side, it is only a short drive into the most southern of keys, Key West.

Travel back in time to the feeling of the original Keys in Big Pine Key & the Lower Keys, relax in this quiet oasis and enjoy the best that nature has to offer.
