Bahia Honda State Park (Snorkel)>

Bahia Honda State Park (Beach)

Bahia Honda State Park encompasses over 524 acres and even includes a small offshore island. Here you can spend the day learning about early explorers, pirates, the Flagler railroad, see artifacts from old shipwrecks, vist a butterfly garden or just enjoy the beautiful beach, ranked in the nation's top 10 by Dr. Beach. If beaches are what you came looking for, there are several in the park. Calusa is the smallest beach and located on the northwest side of the island, Loggerhead is the shallowest with a large sandbar and is at the southern end of the park while Sandspur is the largest and located at the southeast end. All the beaches have restrooms and fresh water showers. Ready for some exercise? There are several nature trails for hiking, Silver Palm Trail, located on the north end, offers a 0.6 mile hike through a grove of silver palms, sea grapes, dogwood and gumbo limbo trees while the trail at the southwest end leads to the old Bahia Honda Bridge which offers a panoramic view of the entire island. Fishing is also a popular pasttime at the park. Fish from shore or launch your own boat, with access to both the Gulf and Atlantic, and bottom fish for snapper and grouper by the old bridge or for bonefish and permit in the shallower sand flats.Remember to purchase a fishing license prior to arrival. Snorkeling in the state park can be done on your own from the beach, which even several hundred yards out it is only 4-6' deep or arrange for a tour to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary at the concession stand. The trip includes 1-1/2 hours in the water so you won't miss a thing. Amenities at the park include a concession stand with sandwiches and snacks, a gift shop, snorkel and kayak rentals as well as some marine supplies. Note: There are also over 80 campsites available with reservations (see more information under hotels)
